About Di Cope

I am an artist, and a Mother of three.  The children take up a huge part of my life, but my art gets more of my time every year.  I work in a studio above the garage in the summer, but it's impossible to heat, so I have to work with the help of Teddy (shown in the photograph) in the house during the colder months.

I started painting seriously in January 2016, and although I started off with a portrait ("Beatrice"- my daughter- see under "rportraits"), my direction has been predominantly drawn towards local landscapes

I work in oil paints mostly.  If I don't have a commission to work to, I'll paint whatever takes my fancy- Currently, I'm drawn to painting landscapes with "big" skies, and summer flowers.  I usually work from my own photographs (but am happy to paint from someone else's for a special, personally meaningful painting).

I also work in "dry" media.  A lot of my earlier "dry" work (which takes less time to set up to work than oils, so always need both "on the go" to fit in between school runs) was in pencil.  I was happy with the results, but it's very slow.  More recently, I have moved to working in charcoal, and/or Conte crayon.  I often mix the two.  I like the effects, and they don't take as long to produce a piece than with pencil.

Although I'm really more a landscape painter,  I do like the challenge of producing  "a good likeness" of portraits (in a variety of media).

I do work to commission, and am happy to welcome visitors to my studio, by arrangement.
